I am honestly not quite sure. But I know I shot it on the Canon 5D Mark III and edited it with Adobe CS6, and both products are absolutely awesome. I am just completely amazed that anyone can now shoot this beautiful footage at night. I never meant for this to be a real test so I won’t go into details but FYI I was using the 24 – 70 2.8L at 2.8 and pretty much every shot was at 3200 ISO.

This video was thrown together so I could play around with my new toys. I understand it is a little out there, so if it turns you off check out some of my more mainstream work in the “Reel Video” section. If the video turns you on then give me a call!

I am shooting a promo video for a specific company at the International Beauty Show (more to come) but while there I had to grab some b-roll of everything because it was just too cool. I actually kind of love shooting b-roll, and as some of my clients will tell you I literally have to be dragged away from shooting it sometimes. But because I was primarily shooting a booth I shot a very limited amount of event b-roll (I think only a couple of shots weren’t used in this video) and edited it together for this video in about 30 minutes. Just wanted to show what can be done in a minimum amount of time with a cool event.

I have three shoots this week that will really benefit from having fast lenses on set, I know we will be using available light primarily and won’t have time to set up controlled shots. I rented the 70 – 200 2.8L IS II, 85 1.2L II and 24 – 70 2.8L, all Canon lenses. In general, when shooting sit down interviews I find I like being in the 70mm to 100mm range, much wider than that and you have too much background to deal with. That isn’t always the case obviously, every shoot, subject and location is different. I have wanted to shoot on the 70 – 200 Version II for a while now and am excited to try it in the field. My limited time with the 85mm has just blown me away. It is absolutely amazing that mere mortals can own or rent a 1.2 aperture lens very easily, it’s kind of not even fair.

We shot 5 interviews today using a collapsible white background. Lighting is key in these situations and we used some basic Lowel Totas to blast a nice even light across the surface in frame. From there you have to light your subject appropriately, we used KinoFlo Diva-Lites as the key and fill and an Arri 300 as a back light. Of course if you don’t white balance correctly nothing will look right! The end results looked really nice with little to no color correction needed.

I was fortunate enough to have the people at Aladdin Bakery call me early one morning for a job. They needed a video shot, edited and shown that day. They were having a soft open for their new bakery, Baked in Brooklyn (which is fantastic by the way), and wanted to show video of the production line during their friends and family event. Nikki and I ran around the production facility grabbing shots of all kinds of awesome equipment and baking goodness. Very cool stuff. They took one look at my gorgeous head of hair and made me put on a hair-net!

This is my basic kit, which isn’t to say that the equipment is basic, but that this kit goes on every single shoot with me. It includes everything I need to capture high quality video and audio. It is constantly evolving as new gear comes out on the market and I adjust my workflow, one thing that you can’t do as a freelance videographer is settle into a comfy routine.

Right now I have…

Camera – Canon 5D Mark II (with batteries, charger and 7.5 hours worth of recording time in CF cards)

Lenses – 24mm – 105mm f4L, 50mm f1.8

Audio – Tascam DR100, shotgun mic, wireless lav, headphones

Monitor – 7″ JVC ProHD Monitor (excited about this bit of gear, new item and it looks great)

Handheld Rig – Zacuto Z-finder, Opteka shoulder rig for handheld stabilization

And various other bits and bobs to held facilitate shooting.

It all lives in the HPRC 2700 watertight case. A case like this may seem like a bit of overkill but when you are constantly getting in and out of cabs, travelling on the subway, going up and down stairs and in and out of elevators it really helps to know that whatever unfortunate event may transpire in transit in NYC, your gear will be perfectly safe. Not to mention it helps to have everything organized for those quick set-ups and breakdowns.
